Popular media depict miners as a rough-and-tumble lot who diligently worked the placers along scenic rushing rivers while living in roaring mining camps in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Trafzer and Hyer destroy this mythic image by offering a collection of original newspaper articles that describe in detail the murder, rape, and enslavement perpetrated by those who participated in the infamous gold rush. "It is a mercy to the Red Devils," wrote an editor of the Chico Courier, "to exterminate them." Newspaper accounts of the era depict both the barbarity and the nobility in human nature, but while some protested the inhumane treatment of Native Americans, they were not able to end the violence. Native Americans fought back, resisting the invasion, but they could not stop the tide of white miners and settlers. They became "strangers in a stolen land."

With an introduction by the editor and a map of Alaska Native Peoples. This "collection of twenty myths is an excellent introduction into the world of southeast Alaska Native cultures." (--Dr. Alexandr Vaschenko) John Smelcer has dedicated his professional life to recording the traditionally oral tales of Alaskan Native peoples; his latest book contains narrative myths and legends from the Eyak, Haida, Tlingit, and Tsimshian Peoples of Southeast Alaska. Thoroughly enchanting as literature and crucially important, along with THE RAVEN AND THE TOTEM and ALASKA NATIVE ORAL NARRATIVE LITERATURE by the same editor, as a reference resource, A CYCLE OF MYTHS "keenly captures the mystical world of Alaska Native legend and lore--a world in which the supernatural is natural."
"No collection of Native American mythology is complete without this book. The most comprehensive collection in print." -- Alaska Magazine

This book contains a series of essays by Native Americans, Hispanics, and Anglos dealing primarily with the diet and health of the native peoples of the United States and Mexico. Several chapters contrast traditional diets with modern-day fare and its accompanying health problems. Traditional healing practices, or curanderismos, are also treated. Other chapters cover the raising and marketing of organic vegetables, the preservation of biodiversity, permaculture, traditional building practices, and the psychology of space and place.

Achimoona means stories in the Cree language. This collection of 10 stories for children ages 8 and up were written by eight Native authors during a workshop in 1985. Metis author Maria Campbell has written an introduction that explains the importance of storytellers in Native cultures and their changing role. She describes the process undertaken by Jordan Wheeler, Bernalda Wheeler, Pricilla Settee, Wes Fineday, Harvey Knight, Peter Deranger, Darlene Frenette and John Cuthand to tell their stories for today's children. In The Hockey Game, a young Native boy boarding with a non-native family tries to make sense of his new surroundings. Naska is a powerful story written from the point of view of a northern pike as she hunts in the Saskatchewan River. Each story combines the wisdom of traditional values with contemporary situations. The book includes 16 colour reproductions of art by well-known Native artists. Achimoona represents one of the first literary collections for children by First Nations authors.

The occupation of Alcatraz Island represents the longest continuous occupation of a federal facility by any minority group in US history. Alcatraz set in motion a wave of overtly nationalist Indian militancy that ultimately resulted in abandonment of the US government's policy of termination and the adoption of a policy of Indian self-determination. This publication commemorates the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Alcatraz occupation and presents poetry and political statements written by Indian people during the occupation or in commemoration of the event.

The impressive breadth and variety of expression among Native Canadian writers is demonstrated in this fine collection. Contained in the volume are short stories, poems, selections from novels and an excerpt from a play. Some pieces--such as Peter Blue Cloud's and editor King's funny and ironic Coyote tales and Harry Robinson's lengthy poem about an Indian who becomes a circus hit in England-- are clearly designed to be read aloud, reflecting their continuity with oral tradition. Others, like Bruce King's eerie and ominous story of the Hookto, an evil entity that sucks the life out of its victims, seem more in the tradition of Stephen King than what most readers would think of as Native fiction. Not all the pieces are set in Canada--locations range as far as Oklahoma and the Southwest, and city dwellers as well as reserve Natives are depicted. The unsentimental, uncompromisingly authentic work thus reflects the increasingly pan-tribal nature of much Native art and discourse.
