Bruchac, Marge (Abenaki)

Margaret M. Bruchac, PhD, is a scholar, performer, and historical consultant specializing in northeastern Algonkian Indian history and folklore. As a member of the Dawnland Singers (with her brother Joe and nephews Jim and Jesse) she performed on the recording Alnobak in 1994. In 1998, she and her husband Justin Kennick produced the recording Zahkiwi Lintowoganal: Voices in the Woods. Her 1999 play, “molly has her say”, was published in Keepers of the Morning Star: Native American Women Playwrights, UCLA Press 2001. She is co-author, with Catherine O’Neill Grace of 1621: A New Look at Thanksgiving, National Geographic 2001. Marge has authored more than 20 academic articles in various publications, and her Connecticut River Valley research is highlighted on the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association website Raid on Deerfield: the Many Stories of 1704. The Wordcraft Circle of Native American Writers and Storytellers has recognized Marge with awards for public performance in 2000, historical writing in 2002, and academic writing in 2004. Her children's book, "Malian's Song" won the 2006 American Folklore Society's "Aesop Award." Her textbook Indigenous Archaeologies: A Reader in Decolonization is forthcoming from Left Coast Press. Dr. Bruchac has been a Visiting Professor at Amherst College, and a Visiting Indigenous Fellow at Harvard. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Coordinator of the Native American Studies Program at the University of Connecticut at Avery Point.
